Parent Responsibilities in Florida

Florida law requires parents to follow specific steps when establishing and maintaining a home education program.

Required Steps Under Florida Statute 1002.41

File a Notice of Intent — Submit a written notice to your school district within 30 days of establishing your home education program.

Maintain a Portfolio — Keep a portfolio of records including a log of educational activities, writing samples, worksheets, and creative materials. The parent determines the contents.

Make Portfolio Available for Inspection — Your portfolio must be available to the superintendent upon 15 days' written notice. (Inspections are rare and not routinely required.)

Provide Annual Evaluation — Submit an annual educational evaluation showing your student's progress to the district superintendent by the anniversary of your notice of intent.

Preserve Portfolios — Keep each student's school year portfolio for a minimum of two years.

File Notice of Termination — Submit a termination form when completing or ending the home education program, or if you move to a different district.
